The village of New Ulm, Texas is just west of Houston and an hour-and-a-half from the International airport. Getting to New Ulm is the easy part, finding Michael Byatt Arabians is a bit trickier. But that should not dissuade you from trying. (Click here for directions.) Once off the busy interstate Highway, we are short 40 minutes away. The last part of the drive has had people scratching their head and wondering why this location was chosen. It’s an easy answer: it was love at first sight. Once off the paved road there is a six-mile stretch of gravel road, where we like to think people have the opportunity to decompress and prepare for a wonderful treat. The hectic pace of our everyday lives slowly abates as you meander down the gravel path. Once on the farm there is unanimous praise for the serenity and natural surroundings. It is a perfect place for nature, man, and animals to coexist in a beautiful setting. There are horses, chickens, cows — and a kangaroo and her roommate wallaby; there are llamas and geese around one corner and around another exotic birds in a setting loaded with majestic oaks. And then there are the horses! Some of the most beautiful horses in the world call this peaceful idyllic setting home. Looking around, one realizes that this is a place built by horsemen for horses. The horses are the kings!
The vision of Michael Byatt is in every detail of the farm. From the barns to the paddocks, the landscape and the buildings, Michael wanted everything to be about the horses and about beauty. He recalls driving down the gravel road initially with fondness, not regret. It reminded him of a time long ago where he rode horses on the road, untroubled by the traffic of a city. Here he knew he could once again have his horses out on the trails while watching the deer run and see all of nature’s grandeur at a pace that felt slow and simple. And it is here in the Texas countryside that the history of the Arabian horse has been forever enhanced. Through the generosity of great clients and Michael’s vision, several Arabian stallions made their way from far away lands to live in New Ulm, Texas. Among them are World and US National Champions. They are the leading stallions on the planet. And they live in peace and contentment, far away from urban pressure.
Together with the array of the legendary stallions are some of the most influential and decorated mares ever. They live in the barns, they live in the pasture. You arrive in one pasture to find a US National Champion Mare living with the dam of the most influential stallion in the world. In another you will find a mare who has founded her own dynasty through the accomplishments of her children. In another, yet again, you will find mares with titles from all over the world. And of course you will see their children. Each year the foal crops from these illustrious mares produce the future stars of the breed. Taking a walk around Michael Byatt Arabians, you are able to see the past, present and the future.
After a walk through the pastures you may want to stroll through the barns where at any given time you might see the horses you read about winning in the most recent show. And, after all of this, after the unforgettable sights that you have just seen, you may need to take a break in the pavilion to watch the horses in the comfort of a luxurious resting spot. Have a drink, reflect, and take a moment to dream. And let’s talk about what brought you to Michael Byatt Arabians. Is it to participate in a sport that teaches you to compete, to take care of an animal, to have discipline, to have responsibility? Or is it to breed horses, to create the horse of your dreams?
